Mauricio Sbarbaro Spanish, b. 1960
Mauricio Sbarbaro began painting in his home town of Montevideo in Uruguay whilst studying architecture at the university there. From 1986 his work was critically acclaimed and he was awarded numerous awards and art prizes.
In 1993 he moved to Europe and settled firstly in Madrid, Spain and after a year permanently in Cadaques, northern Catalonia. Many artists have been associated with Cadaques, particularly Salvador Dali but Mauricio’s influences as a painter are the Catalan artists Torres Garcia, Miro and Tapies.
As someone who has sailed all his life, the Mediterranean sea characterises his painting. An abstract artist for the last twenty years - the small port of Cadaques and Punta del Este in his home country provide his inspiration.
Mauricio Sbarbaro’s work has been included in over fifty group shows in Europe, USA and Uruguay and he has had 20 solo exhibitions, the most recent in Paris.
