Mary Fedden

1915
Born in Bristol and attended Badminton School.
1932-36
Studied at Slade School of Arts, London under Vladimir Polunin of Ballet Russes.
Worked for a time painting sets at Sadlers Wells.
Taught art in Bristol and painted portraits.
During WW2 served in the Land Army and for WVS, called up in 1944 and worked as a driver for the NAAFI.
1949
Travelled with Julian Trevelyan to Sicily (they later travelled widely together including to Africa, India, Russia, America and throughout Europe).
Moved to Durham Wharf, Chiswick house and studios where she lived until her death.
1951
Married Julian Trevelyan (1910 - 1988).
Commissioned to produce a mural for the Television Pavilion, Festival of Britain and also murals for P&O and Charing Cross and Colindale hospitals.
1953
First exhibition at the Redfern Gallery.
1958
Taught at the Royal College of Art for eight years.
1965-70
Taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Surrey.
1984-88
President of the Royal West of England Academy (and a member since 1930s).
1988
Retrospective exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy.
1992
Elected Royal Academician.
1997
Made an OBE.
